Senator No More

May 10th, 2008 by Jason C

The Ottawa Sun reports that Wade Redden will not be suiting up for the Sens next year. It was reported that the two sides were too far apart in contract negotiations, with the Sens ready to offer Redden a Chris Phillips-contract, worth about $3.5m/year. It is no secret that Redden’s play has been digressed and been inconsitent at best since Zdeno Chara left, but teams will still be willing to offer the rearguard a contract in the neighbourhood of what he’s earning now, $6.5m/year.

Teams that may be in the running for his services…Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Colorado, Los Angeles, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Phoenix, San Jose, St. Louis, Washington

    My opinion.

    Atlanta - yes
    Chicago - maybe
    Columbus - yes
    Colorado - maybe
LA - no (they have Visnovsky and Preissing ((although I don’t remember if he signed a 1 or 2 year deal with LA)))
    NYI - yes
    NYR - yes
Pheonix - no (their d core is solid)
SJ - no (only changes if Campbell doesn’t resign)
    St.Louis - maybe
Washington - Unlikely, they have Green, Poti, Pothier, with Alzner coming in soon (as soon as next season) plus Ovechkin plays the point.

Chicago - they’ll be looking for a veteran presence on the blueline. Redden fits the bill, and they do have cap room.
Colorado - they have cap room, and traditionally have done well in luring UFAs to Denver.
LA - they were rumoured to be in the Redden sweepstakes, and it hasn’t changed. They have tons of cap room, and a Visnovsky-Pressing 1-2 isn’t as good as you think.
Phoenix - They have cap room, and either Boynton or Morris will be gone by next year.
SJ - I agree, it all depends on Campbell

I don’t know, guess difference of opinions, and I never proclaimed that a Visnovsky-Preissing pairing is good. Plus they also have Johnson, plus what news of Rob Blake? Reddens a possibility, I just don’t see it though. I think Wade Redden is going to be the worst signing a team can make this off-season, he’s going to want $5 million atleast when he hasn’t done much.

LA really needs a goalie and 5-6 d-men that are rough.

Wade Redden is similar to Bryan McCabe. Offensively gifted but shoddy defensively. They’re exposed when too much pressure is applied to them. Redden doesn’t deserver a cent above $4 million, but he’ll likely get around $5.5 or more due to the limited number of top tier D-men on the market.

A lot of this depends on what Brian Campbell decides to do with himself. He’s the number 1 D on the Free Agent market as of July 1st, bar none.

I believe Campbell will re-sign in SJ. They certainly have the money to get something done.

Campbell should re-sign in SJ, but if he wishes to go back East then Redden will be the next target.

Marco, Blake is a UFA this season, so his $6m cap hit comes off the books this year, and he will return, but probably at no more than $2.5m/year. There are a ton of holes in the LA lineup, but Redden would give them good size on the backend, and a potential mentor to Johnson.

Steve, I think with the way the Sens’ defensemen have played this year, and if all things were relative, Redden would get no more than the $3.5m Phillips earns. But because the players can demand it and GMs can offer it, Redden will still get in the neighbourhood of $6m/year.
