He’s the Man

June 2nd, 2008 by Jason Chen

TSN reports that Toronto interim GM Cliff Fletcher has found the right man as head coach, but has remained tight-lipped about who that man is, although TSN believes it to be former Sharks head coach Ron Wilson. The Leafs finally made some headway into their busy off-season, and it bodes well for the organization and its fans that it has (reportedly) landed Wilson. He’s an established winning coach, something that the Leafs haven’t had in some time.

The only thing that bothers me, however, is that usually when a coach is hired a new GM is named as to make sure that the coach and GM aren’t at odds with each other. If Fletcher has proceeded to hire a coach without naming a GM, it means that perhaps Fletcher will stay on as GM until next summer, when Brian Burke becomes available, if he doesn’t sign an extension that has been put on the table by the Ducks.

In a related matter, Mats Sundin could be very expensive to retain, and is more than likely to suit up for another team next year, with Ottawa and Montreal’s names being mentioned as likely destinations. Rumours are going around that Sundin believes he deserves a lucrative contract considering the amount of time he’s been of service to the Leafs, and that maybe perhaps he feels a little burned by the fact that management approached him at the deadline to waive his no-trade clause. His asking price could be, reportedly, as high as $8m.

I’d give a swift kick in the ass out the door if he wants $8 million. He’s the 4th richest player currently in history.
