Moving Marleau

June 3rd, 2008 by Jason Chen

The hottest rumour going around is Patrick Marleau perhaps going to Columbus as soon as the end of this month. After firing Ron Wilson, Doug Wilson wants to re-vamp the roster, and the first order of business is to perhaps unload Marleau and his undesirable contract. His no-trade clause kicks in this summer, and Wilson will be working the phones to move him before that happens. This really comes as no surprise, as Marleau, who had inked an extension before the season, had a disappointing year and was the subject of many trade rumours. The Sharks’ latest early exit from the playoffs means that changes were to be made, and despite the players’ stance that nothing needs to be changed, Wilson thought otherwise.

Rumoured to be going the other way is this year’s first round pick (6th) and either a top prospect of Nikolai Zherdev, a decent scoring winger that San Jose has clearly lacked, although by trading away Marleau they’re a top six centre short, although Torrey Mitchell and Joe Pavelski surprised many this year. If the trade goes through, then finally Rick Nash will have a number one centre to play with, and we all know what Nash can do as an individual, let alone having someone to set him up.
