Kings Enter Fray

July 17th, 2008 by Jason Chen

Updating on the apparent blockbuster in the Chicago-Ottawa deal, it looks like the Kings have jumped into the mix. Yes, that’s right, the Kings. Apparently, the Kings are willing to give up Anze Kopitar to Chicago, in the hopes of landing Andrej Meszaros and Martin Gerber, while the Sens would get Nikolai Khabibulin and either Brent Seabrook or Cam Barker. This 3-way trade rumour was recently shot down by Spector and earlier this morning by Dale Tallon and Bryan Murray.

I had thought that a deal would be possible between Chicago and Ottawa, as both teams need to shed some salary and have goaltending issues that need to be dealt with. However, with the Kings entering the equation it throws the entire trade out of whack. I do not know the source of the rumour, but it would be incredibly ill-advised and downright poor decision by Dean Lombardi to deal away his top forward. Kopitar is an emerging top 5 talent in the league and it would be absolutely self-destructing to deal him away for an inconsistent starting goalie and a top 4 defenseman. This doesn’t mean there isn’t a deal in the works, but it just means that this rumoured deal won’t happen.

If Lombardi did this deal as quoted, he should be fired.

Andrej Meszaros and Martin Gerber for Kopitar on the Kings front? Why not just throw in Bernier and Doughty while your at it?

This deal has no chance. Way more to it. if Im LA im wanting both teams 1st round picks, as well as Vermette thrown in before I consider this at all.
